A. Scholarships Available

AFB 2011 SCHOLARSHIPS

The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) is now accepting scholarship applications for the legally blind. There are several scholarship programs available which the applicants can select from its online website.

How to Apply

Applicants must go to the website http://www.afb.org/ and fill out an online application form. The form can be used to apply for several scholarships. The application form/s and additional supporting documents must be received by the foundation not later than April 30, 2011.

The scholarship committee will only be reviewing the applications that are complete with all the supporting documents and has met all the scholarship requirements.

Program Requirements

The application forms must be submitted with all the later documents without exceptions:

  • The complete online application form for 2011 which includes all sections for the essays. The essays would not be accepted separated from the application. Torres applicants should also complete the Part Four of the application.
  • Official and first transcripts
  • Proof of applicant's post-secondary acceptance
  • Letters of recommendation (2)
  • Proof of applicant's US citizenship
  • Proof of applicant's legal blindness
  • FAFSA (AFB will require an SAR copy of the section of the FAFSA application.

The supporting documents must be collected and sent into ONE envelope addressed to AFB Scholarship Committee. Documents must not be sent unless all the required materials are complete. Incomplete scholarship application packets would not be considered.

Restrictions or Rules

The scholarship programs are only offered to legal US citizens and has proof of legal blindness and financial need.

NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND 2011 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The National Federation of the Blind offers scholarships every year to blind college students in the US. The Scholarships are worth $3,000 to $12,000. The program will run starting November of 2011 until its deadline on March 31, 2012.

How to Apply

Applicants must go thru the website http://www.nft.org/scholarship and go thru this later process:

  • download the PDF form on Confirmation of Legal Blindness
  • read the online article of Scholarship Chairperson Patti S. Gregory-Chang, esq "The Secret to Winning a National Federation of the Blind Scholarship"
  • read thru the Scholarships FAQ (Frequently Questioned Questions)
  • Download and complete the online Scholarship Application form 2011. You can also use the printed edition
  • Fill out one scholarship application only. Choose from the list of scholarships available online
  • view the podcast "Thru Our Eyes" hosted by Joe Ruffallo

Program Requirements

The eligibility requirements for the program are:

  • applicant must be in both eyes legally blind
  • must be a resident of the United States, Puerto Rico or the Constituency of Columbia
  • must be enrolled or about to pursue a post-secondary, full-time course study in a United States institution degree program in the school year of 2011, except one scholarship will be agreed to any person that is full time employed during attendance of part-time school
  • participates in the whole NFB national convention and in all the scheduled program activities of the scholarship.

B. Grants Available

ROYAL BLIND SOCIETY GRANTS

Yearly, the Royal Blind Society awards grants to visually challenged individuals so they can lead more independent and fulfilling lives. The grants are used for paying household bills, fund training for work, for buying specialist medical gear like thick-lens spectacles, provide their daily living aids like washing machines with Braille operated controls and to meet their unforeseen emergencies/needs.

How to Apply

Applicants must view and download the application form on the website http://www.royalblindsociety.org . They must view the full term and situation of the grants on the same website and choose the grant program they want. Program Requirements

The program requirements vary depending on the grant program chosen. Applicant must view the Grant program website to get full details and complete information.

Restrictions or Rules

Grants are agreed to individuals registered as partially sighted or blind and stable residents of UK. Applications are only accepted if coursed through a professional welfare hand, social hand or a rehabilitation officer or social hand of an official community blind association or Citizens' Advice Bureau, or the administrator of a day care center, etc.

Grants are not awarded if the disposable income of the household is over 104 pounds a week or 182 pounds a week for the first 2 individuals. Grants are not awarded if the household savings go over 4,000 pounds.
