PhD Scholarship in Biodiversity/ Restoration Ecology at Victoria ...

A prestigious scholarship, supported by the Victoria University Foundation and run through the Centre for Biodiversity & Restoration Ecology (CBRE), is available for a PhD student to undertake research on a topic within the area of biodiversity and restoration ecology. The successful candidate will be based at Victoria University of Wellington and will work on a project in the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) where academic supervision will be provided. The focus will be on   biodiversity research applied to the need to identify and restore depleted populations, species and communities in ecosystems that have been impacted by creature activity, particularly within New Zealand.

Criteria

CBRE aims for both distinction in scientific research, and delivery of the end product of that research in a form that directly benefits conservation management, the community community and the commercial sector.

The successful applicant should have an outstanding academic track record in a relevant biological discipline. The applicant will be expected to have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree with academic distinction equivalent to a First Class Honours degree at a New Zealand University. The position is open to both New Zealand and international students. Students whose first language is not English are required to meet the English language proficiency requirements for postgraduate study at Victoria University. Research areas of interest that will be considered are:

Animal-plant relationships
Behavioural ecology
Biotechnology
Coastal ecology
Conservation biology
Endemic species biology
Evolutionary relationships
Invasive species biology
Plant eco-physiology
Urban ecology and landscape design

Scholarship Value

The stipend covers living expenses (NZ $26,000 pa) plus tuition fees. N.B. international tuition fees for PhD study in NZ are the same as for domestic students.

Scholarship Tenure

The Scholarship will be held for up to three years.
