A. Scholarships Available

NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS RETENTION PROGRAM

The NSBE society offers innumerable corporate-sponsored and NSBE scholarships and award the opportunities to pre-college and college graduate and undergraduate students and its professional technical members. The scholarship amounts ranges in value from $500 – $10,500. On top of the scholarships, the organization provides access to awards that give acknowledgement to members with the highest achievements.

How to Apply

To apply for the scholarships offered by NSBE, the applicant must:

  • Login their NSBE account or join as a member
  • They must click on the menu
  • Under the tab ACTIONS, they must click on the Submissions (for scholarships, application,etc)
  • Click on the competition or scholarship you are applying for
  • Complete the application form and click continue/submit or save as draft, if it is applicable to complete and restore the application before the deadline date.

Program Requirements

In order to be eligible for the NSBE scholarships:

  • You must be an active and paid member of NSBE
  • Your transcript must be submitted for GPA confirmation with the World Head Quarters by Fall of 2010 or at a later date.

Unofficial transcripts must be emailed to scholarships@nsbe.org

Restrictions or Rules

The later policies were established for persons selected in receiving the NSBE scholarship awards.

  • The scholarship recipient cannot receive more than 2 scholarship awards in a agreed program year.
  • Members that have applied for more than 1 scholarship that involves internship requirements must indicate their rank in acceptance of scholarship awarded once chosen as a recipient.

NBNA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The National Black Nurses Association puts their commitment to distinction in education and they conduct continuing education programs for allied health professionals and nurses all through the year. This association provides yearly student scholarships. The scholarship provides funds for continuing education. The funds enables nurses to develop and get better in contributing their talents to the healthcare and health of the communities. The scholarships range in the amounts of $500 to $2000.

How to Apply

The Scholarship Application form must be downloaded from the website http://www.nbna.org and must be installed into your computer as a PDF file.

The application form must be completed and sent with the required supporting documents to:
Ms. Estella Lazenby (elazenby@nbna.org). The official transcripts should be post-marked April 15 of each year. Applicant must browse thru the website to get the complete list of application requirements.

Program Requirements

The candidate must currently be enrolled in any nursing program (Diploma, BSN, AD or LPN/LVN) and must be in excellent school permanent. He/she must be a NBNA member and a member of their community chapter. The applicant must have a minimum of 1 year of school remaining.

Applicants must provide the later requirements:

  • Official transcript/s from a certified School of Nursing
  • A two page written essay
  • 2 letters of recommendation- (1) from the candidate's nursing school and (2) from the community chapter. If the community chapter does not exist, a letter from the nurse in the community area can take its place. The letters and essay must be submitted along with the application.
  • The additional items that must accompany the application must support the candidate's desirability and eligibility. These documents must be evidence of: (1) participation in activities for student nurses; and (2) involvement in African American Community, for example, letters, awards, news clippings, certificates, etc.

B.Grants Available

FEDERAL PELL GRANT

The Centralized Pell Grant is a program federally funded for undergraduates who have never earned their baccalaureate degree.

How to Apply

The US Department of Education or ED determines the eligibility of the applicant basing it on a standard formula that is established by Congress. The SAR (Student Aid Report) determines your eligibility for the Pell Grant. The amounts of the awards vary and are based on the financial need and number of credit hours you are enrolled in. The maximum amount awarded for the year is $4,050. These awards are distributed at least once for each term. The FAFSA must be received by the Financial Aid Office on or before the last enrollment day to make you eligible for payment.

Program Requirements

If there are necessary corrections to be made on your SAR (Student Aid Report) you will be sent a written notice from the Office of Financial Aid, Scholarships and Student Employment. The corrections to be made are the later:

  • Corrections must be made on Part II of your SAR and returned directly to the FAFSA processor to the address shown at the end of the document.
  • Visit the website www.fafsa.ed.gov. By using the assigned PIN number agreed by the Department of Education, students can update their birthday or social security number on this site electronically.
  • Students can opt to seek the advice of a Howard University financial aid representative in making the correction which will be electronically transferred to the Department of Education by EDE system (Electronic Data Exchange). It is recommended that you speak first with a financial aid representative of Howard University former to making corrections on the first SAR document.
