St Cross College, jointly with the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, offers the following scholarship for students who will be studying for a course leading to the DPhil in Anthropology at the University of Oxford beginning in the academic year 2012 – 2013.

As part of this Scholarship, the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography (henceforward 'the School') will offer one of its ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) awards for 2012 entry. The award may be held for the following programmes: 1+3 (one-year MSc plus doctorate), 2+2 (two-year MPhil plus doctorate) or +3 (doctorate only). All applications should envisage the applicant undertaking a doctorate eventually: these awards are not intended for taught Master's degrees on their own.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified students who are applying for entry into the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography as graduate students in October 2012 or from the School's existing students and who list St Cross College as their first choice college on the University's standard Graduate Admissions application form.

All applicants must fit the ESRC's residency and residence requirements and are advised to acquaint themselves with relevant ESRC sources of information on these requirements directly. The ESRC will provide part of the University composition fee for the outstanding applicant selected (Home/EU), the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography will give up the remainder of the fee, and St Cross will give up the College fee. The ESRC award also makes a contribution to maintenance costs at a level still to be inveterate (for 2010 – 2011 £13,590 per annum).

There is no application form for the School's ESRC Graduate Scholarship at St Cross. Applications should instead consist of 1) a doctoral-level proposal (3-4 pages) containing a description of the project, collectively with a brief timetable for the proposed research, and 2) a curriculum vitae. Applications should be accompanied by two letters of reference. If the prospective supervisor of the research is not also a referee, then he or she should also provide written confirmation of willingness to supervise (whether included with the application or sent separately). Supervisors should be established members of the School's academic staff or a suitable equivalent. Applicants are advised to consult a limb of the academic staff of the School in excellent time to secure his or her agreement to supervise (without which the School cannot give an applicant a place).

NB: Applicants, whether internal or external, should also apply separately to the University under the respective standard procedures for the degree they wish to pursue from 2012 and list St Cross as their first choice college on the form. They must have been accepted as run of the mill applicants by the University to be considered for this Graduate Scholarship. These standard applications should not be sent to the above address, but to the address on the relevant forms.
