Two PhD scholarships at the Department of Psychology ...

The PhD programme provides PhD students with strong research training which opens up a window of opportunity to a diversity of careers surrounded by the private and public sectors. The programme includes the drafting of a PhD thesis, active participation in research networks, PhD courses, teaching and additional forms of knowledge broadcasting. The PhD programme can be undertaken as a three-year full-time study surrounded by the framework of the 5+3 study programme or as a four-year full-time study surrounded by the framework of the 4+4 study programme.

Two PhD scholarships at the Department of Psychology

Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships at the Department of Psychology at the University of Copenhagen. The PhD scholarships are financed by a grant from the elite programme “Sapere Aude” established by the Danish Council for Independent Research (see http://en.fi.dk/councils-commissions/the-danish-council-for-independent-research/sapere-aude). The PhD students will be part of the Sapere Aude project “The attentive mind: towards a unified theory of visual selectivity and arousal” that investigates visual attention by a combination of methods from cognitive psychology, clinical neuropsychology, EEG, and cognitive pharmacology. The project is directed by Associate Professor Thomas Habekost, who can be contacted for additional information (Thomas.Habekost@psy.ku.dk).

Two PhD-projects will be financed. The first PhD-scholarship is related to empirical studies of attentional function in children with ADHD. The second PhD-scholarship is aimed at empirical studies of attentional deficits after brain hurt. Applicants must demonstrate strong motivation and capability for empirical research surrounded by the area of cognitive neuroscience. The Sapere Aude project is a team effort, and the two PhD-students are expected to work closely with the additional members of the research group.  

Employment is expected to start on 1 January 2012.

Applications

• The Faculty welcomes applications from all suitably qualified people in any case of age, gender, race, religion, ethnic background and residency.

• In order to be awarded a PhD scholarship the applicant has to enrol as a PhD student at the Faculty of Social Sciences, cf. the rules of the Danish Ministerial Order No. 18 of 14 January 2008.
• An assessment committee will evaluate the applications. The applicants will be told of the composition of the assessment committee. When the assessment committee has refined the evaluation each applicant will receive the evaluation of his/her application. Selected applicants will be called for interview with the project director.

• Please note that no project description, study plot, or budget is required for the application. The two PhD projects are certain surrounded by the Sapere Aude programme and the applicant will be evaluated according to his/her personal qualifications. The applicant must submit a brief (1-2 pages) explanation of his/her motivation to apply for the PhD scholarship. In the online application form – please use the rubric “additional information to consider”.

The 5+3 PhD study programme

In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD study programme the applicant must have completed a master´s degree fruitfully before starting his or her employment. PhD students are paid salary according to the agreement linking the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the three-year employment period without additional pay. The work obligation can include for instance teaching.

The 4+4 PhD study programme

Students who have completed a BSc and 60 ECTS of a master´s degree programme can enrol as PhD students simultaneously with their enrolment in the master´s degree programme. Applicants should check the specific study programmes for more detailed similes of entry requirements. Until a master´s degree is obtained the grant is paid partly in the form of up to 48 state education grant parts (in Danish: SU-klip). More specifically the PhD student will be paid two grant parts per month plus salary for work (teaching, presentations etc.) which totals a workload of at least 280 hours. Payment and conditions of employment are carried out in accordance with the agreement linking the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Upon completion of the master´s degree programme the student is transferred to a salary-earning PhD scholarship.
