  • BCLU has Chinese foreign language courses for all levels of learners, beginner to advanced (no minimum foreign language ability required). All students will be given a qualification test to determine their ability, in order to place them in the right level. There are 20 hours of class per week and six levels as stated below:

    Level A: is for beginners. This course includes the study of Chinese pinyin, basic sentence patterns, Chinese characters, and grammar.

    Level B: is for students who have some pronunciation training, know about 800 Chinese words, and can speak in simple, day after day conversation. The course includes reading, prose, listening, and language. It focuses on Chinese pinyin, day after day conversation, improving listening skills, reading skills, and prose exercises.

    Level C: is for students who know about 1500 Chinese words and basic sentence patterns, as well as the ability to engage in day after day conversation. This course is more wide in building skills: listening, prose, reading, and language abilities. You will build your vocabulary, continuing to study sentence patterns and grammar, intensify reading exercises, and know the meaning and usage of words.

    Level D: is for students who know at least 2500 Chinese words, and have a system of knowledge of Chinese grammar, as well as being able to speak in day after day conversation at a higher level than Level C. There will be strong emphasis on building listening, reading, prose, and language skills.

    Level E: is for students who know about 3500 Chinese words, and can engage in more complicated discussions, as well as give small speeches.

    Level F: is for students with a vocabulary larger than 4,000 Chinese words and can prompt detailed thoughts in day after day conversation.

This program is held throughout the year for 1 week up to an Academic Year. Fees vary depending on the accommodation and service items selected.

  • Eligibility: Students in a GAC Semester, One Year, Summer, or Small-term study or work abroad program in China are eligible for the scholarships. Criteria: GAC scholarships will be awarded to students based on the following: cost of the program; financial need; quality of required personal statement and scholarship essay; academic record; and letter of recommendation. Submission Deadline: All documents must be received at least two weeks before t he appropriate program start date. Application Procedure: – Please see the Scholarship Application Form and fill out all required information. – Send all additional documents to the scholarship application, along with the Scholarship Application Form to GAC. All application materials must be received at least two weeks before the appropriate program start date and will be evaluated once the student has been accepted into the program. Choice and Announcement of Results: – Applicants my be required to submit additional information and conduct telephone interview – Results will be announced 2 weeks before the program starts via email – Awards will only be inveterate when selected candidates registered with GAC programs – The award is renewable for a additional 2 or more years to cover the study period Notes * Scholarship may not be used towards any program or housing date extensions if the student decides to come before or stay after their program’s start and end dates. * Although the scholarship total will be calculated based on the cost of the entire program, the scholarship may not be used to pay the required program deposit upon program application approval.
