Scholarships are usually awarded for academic distinction.  Bursaries are usually awarded based on financial need and evidence of community support.

We are very fortunate to have a excellent number of community businesses, services and organizations which are willing to donate significant amounts of money to our grads. The makings grads will be invited to complete applications for community scholarships and bursaries in early February.  Each application usually requires completion of an application form, a current transcript and a personal resume (MHS provides the transcripts and we will make photo copies of resumes).  As well, some sponsors may require inclusion of a brief biographical essay, or question for additional criteria. Applicants are advised to prepare as much as possible in advance so they will be well positioned to submit applications when required.

Apr. 11 2011 Ontario Federation of Labour Honour Roll Scholarships – Must be the daughter/son of a member of a union in Ontario which belongs to the OFL (most do).  Need to submit a resume, proof of understanding of the Canadian Labour Movement, and 1,000 word essay on a specified topic.  Go to www.ofl.ca/youth on the web then in the section "Ontario Federation of Labour Honour Roll Scholarships" click on "Read More" then download the application materials.  Deadline is May 27/11.  Details available also at sstewart@ofl.ca (Sylvia Stewart).

2011 Union Gas Essay Scholarship – 2500 essay required – topic "The future of energy – balancing the growing demand for energy with the need to reduce our impact on the environment.  What can I do to effect exchange?"  Deadline for entries is April 29/11.  Entries can be mailed or emailed:  Kimberley Wahamaa, Operations Administrator, Northern Ontario Business, 158 Elgin Street, Sudbury, ON  P3E 3N5 kimberley@nob.on.ca  800-757-2766.  On the web go to www.noba.ca then select "Call for Entries" from top menu bar, then select "Union Gas Scholarship Form" from drop-down menu.

Mar. 22 Geraldine Ruth Rogers Scholarships available to students applying to university in September, 2011.  Must have a minimum average of 80% in all grade 12 subjects, get a reference from a high school administrator, a guidance counsellor, an adult in your community and submit and 800 word essay on one of two supplied topics.  Deadline is April 27, 2011.  More info available at the Thunder Bay Foundation www.tbcf.org or call 807-475-7279 – application packages available in guidance.

Mar. 25 Carpenters' Community Union 1669 is offering two bursaries to daughters/sons of union members.  Applications are in guidance and the deadline to apply is June, 2011.

Feb. 28  Superior Credit Union "Laptops for Learners" Scholarship – app forms available in guidance.  Criteria:  must provide transcript & teacher reference; must graduate this year and go on to a program at Confederation College or Lakehead University; must be an member or a daughter or son of an active member of the credit union; deadline for apps is May 6th/11.

Feb.  28 Superior Credit Union "John Scott Memorial Award" Scholarship – app forms available in guidance.  Criteria:  must provide transcript & teacher reference; must graduate this year and go on to a program at a college or university; must be an member or a daughter or son of an active member of the credit union; deadline for apps is May 6th/11.

Feb. 18  CAW Community 229 has their 2011 bursaries worth $500 for memebers or daughters/sons of members.  Deadline to apply is April 8th/11.  Apps in guidance, or contact President kari Jeffort at 807-474-4229 or kjcaw229@tbaytel.net.

Feb. 10  Construction & Allied Workers Community Union 607 – Applicants must be a daughter/son or a ward of a union member, graduate this year and enter postsecondary in September/11.   Details & apps in the guidance office and deadline is April 30/11.

Dec. 15:  RBC Royal Bank Scholarships for Undergraduates – 6 awards of $10,000.00 – app. deadline is Feb. 1/11 – must be graduating in June/11 and enrolling in a Canadian university in Sept./11.  See details at: http://scholarships.rbc.com/Undergraduate.aspx

Dec. 15:  French for the Future National Essay contest – 58 prizes from $2,000 – $20,000.  Deadline is Jan 10/11.  For details see:  www.french-future.org

Dec. 3:  Laurier University, Waterloo, ON offering 100 new full-tuition scholarships to mark their centennial birthday.  Must be a 1st year applicant, demonstrate leadership, have a minimum average of 80%, provide a description of characteristics of leadership, passion and achievement, describe three work experiences, describe extra-curricular activities & volunteer experiences.  Apps due Feb. 28th/11.  see www.chooselaurier.ca/100.

Nov. 15:  Toyota Earth Day Scholarship.  Go to www.earthday.ca/scholarship for details on at least 20 awards of at least $5,000 each.  All information is linked for applications, eligibility, etc.  Applications must be posted not later than Jan. 30, 2011.

Oct. 6:  TD Scholarships For Community Leadership – TD Bank is offering up to $70,000.00 over 4 years to qualified applicants for their scholarship program.  Application forms are available in guidance, or forms and details can be obtained at:  1-800-308-8306 or www.td.com/scholarship.

Foundation for the Progress of Aboriginal Youth (FAAY) is offering scholarships/bursaries to First Nation students in high school or applying to college/university.  For details see www.ccab.com/faay or call 1-866-566-3229.  Application deadline is October 15, 2009.

Wendy's Classic Achievers Award – go to www.wendysclassicachiever.ca and select the "Apply Now" button near the top of the page to apply.  Application deadline is November 2, 2009.

Allan Simpson Learning Fund Awards, Independent Order of Odd Fellows – scholarship for young public who are full orphans (both parents late).  Applications available in guidance or email at charles.benson@sympatico.ca.

Dec. 8 – Influential Women of Northern Ontario 2010 Aspiring Achiever Scholarship – $2000 prize – 2000 word essay required on "Women in Leadership".  Contact info:  705-673-5705 Ext. 320, kimberley@nob.on.ca, www.influentialwomen.ca.  Applications available in guidance.  Deadline is Friday, March 12, 2010.

Feb. 26:  Carpenter's Constituency Council of Ontario, Community Union 1669 – bursaries available if a daughter, son or ward of a union member.  Applications availabe in guidance – need recommendation by the principal – deadline for apps is June 4/10.

June 4:  Dr. Albert Rose Bursary available to grads who live in rent-geared-to-income households qualify to apply.  Applications available in guidance and the deadline to apply is July 9th.
