My son is still in high school ( Junior) but I was wondering, when is a excellent time to try for a scholarship for college and how do you go about doing so?

If you are getting a scholarship from the college or through the college itself, you would have to wait to see if he is accepted to that school first. As soon as he is accepted to that school, regardless if he chooses to go there or not, you may apply for scholarships, as long as he meets the requirements for said scholarships. (That is to say that if he is an incoming freshman, but the scholarship he is interested in is only for current freshmen, then he would not be eligible. The requirements for each scholarship should be provided.) These types of scholarships able often be found on the universitys website. If he is an outstanding student, scholarships may just be offered to him upon acceptance. Of course, if he is offered a scholarship from a school and then decides not to go there, he must also decline the scholarship from that school.

Additional excellent sources of scholarships are through the high school. These are mostly offered to seniors. A excellent place to look for these is in the schools guidance department. Additional sources of scholarships able be through the community- for instance your church may offer scholarships (if you concentrate a church or additional religious worship-place), some companies offer scholarships (I reckon Kohls does), and there are some scholarships which are just Agreed to students and dont require application (these are rare).

So in small, scholarships arent something you need to worry about right now as your son is a junior. Right now I would be looking into colleges and preparing to apply this ucomputeroming fall. Have him visit schools so he knows which ones he is most interested in. Have him take (or retake if they arent up to his/ his schools-of-choices standards) his ACT/SATs. As soon as he becomes a senior, more scholarship opportunities will open up, and he able start applying to scholarships through the colleges he is accepted to, his high school, and his community.
